I believe that certain things should be in-built and not meant to be showy. Like the hyped-up 7 arenas, or that Singapore is a blessed nation, or that Singapore is the best country, ...
Books are written by people and the 7 arenas are thought up by people, despite with the anointing of God; there are more than these 7 arenas and each one of us represents more than 1 arena: we are part of a family, our savings are in the finance sector, we undergo education, etc.
Similarly, the realization that we're special, that we have to bless the nations, our destiny, bla bla bla. It's politics. I would probably have voted against Martin Luther King if he's running for Presidency.
I just believe that such things ought to be in-built. It should be like courtesy, or consider an example of taking our breaths: breathing keeps us alive and it is bigger than all other activities but it goes unnoticed. Showy things are superficial stuff, like the hairstyle, clothing, etc.
I'd also touch on patriotism. I want the best for Singapore but I am not naive to think that we are the best because we have always struggled to achieve our position and the future looks bleak because the playing field is getting more even and we do not have the natural resources to begin with.
I feel disgusted sometimes when people are so proud of Singapore because they're just obnoxious. Let's look at the 2 footballers who became Singapore citizens but returned to Croatia, giving up the Singapore passport. It's time look at our policies and see why such people can't take roots here.
Rather than feeling good about the latest statistical report that showed Singapore as being the best place to live in among expatriates.
We can only improve when we know we have room for improvement.
