Yawnz

Somehow I love to gym before work, it's a nice walk from the office to the gym in the morning. Seeing clubbers wasted along the road, more people getting ready for work, ... Oh I must say that I was surprised to see Angel and May at the office as early as 7.30am ...

Anyway, had a nice run and did weights before heading back to office. Had wanted to go again tomorrow morning but then, got to meet my boss for discussion at 8.30am, so ...

Dinner was at Joan Bowen, I'm too lazy to describe how it got started but need to thank Julia for the invite. Say so many others there, Pearly and Pei at another table, then Joyce and her friends. Drove Pearly's car back to her house before taking the train back heh.

Yawn

Okok, I should be on my way home from Andrea's farewell but I can explain:
  • I was tired

Thanks to the cancelled tennis and Sentosa outing, I had my morning and afternoon free and so, I embarked on my first baby step towards becoming a real triathlete. Tackling the weakest of the 3 sports, I headed down to the pool to do a swim, focusing on sustaining rather than speed, I think it is possible. Just don't know how long it will take for me to reach 750m and then open water. I came home and napped for 2+ hours (my yandao brother even jested that it was a wasteful way to spend a weekend), I couldn't work on the slides for next week's meeting with PS because my eyes were heavy.

  • Leaving home just for the farewell and Man U vs Arsenal at 12.10am

I didn't want to spend almost 2 hours on travelling, knowing that I will be at the farewell for say, only 30min. I tried, really tried to plan (albeit a little late) for a movie to give myself more impetus to leave home. I had a movie-kaki, had the movies in mind, only to see them all fully booked.

  • I have quit alcohol and tennis at 7am tomorrow

Say I miss my soccer match ... but I have quit alcohol and have been clean for over a month (didn't touch a drop of the wine in office). And though I wouldn't mind sipping orange juice or cream soda, I also have a 7am tennis game tomorrow morning (it's tough to be below my already below-par performance because there is only Francis and me in a single court).

So ...

-----------------------------------------------------------

I was at Little Vietnam last evening with my colleagues. It was at the Grandlink Square. Ok, what do they say in the food review page? Food: Wonderful; Price: Extremely Cheap; Ambience: It's the Geylang area so ... ; Service: Superb (and did I say that the Vietnamese are simply slim by nature, must be their healthy diet). Please try the authentic Vietnamese coffee!! It is a steal at $2 and I must declare that I am not interested in Starbucks anymore.

After 3+ hours of belly-filling makan, we had to each pay roughly 13 or 14 dollars. Woo~

Yes, rom-com with a happy ending. Extremely surreal but definitely heart-warming.

Stupidity has no cure

Was never so pissed at the stupidity of people but this was really over the board.

I entered the 7-eleven and took a drink to the cashier, it cost $1.65. I took out $1.70 and the Malay kid at the counter asked me if I had 5-cents. I checked (really checked) and replied that I didn't. And then, he just shrugged and closed his drawer. End of story.

Huh? Even if he had to fork out from his pocket, there was no way to make the customer fork out more money this way. I pointed to the other cashier machine (no words, I'm glad I didn't open my mouth because nothing good would have come out of it), he opened it and gave the 'Bingo!' look. He passed me all-too-precious 5-cents and I left, still visibly agitated. I regret now because I should have pointed at my temple to indicate that he was really brainless.

Dinner was at an Okinawa Diner Nirai-Karai at Tanglin Shopping Centre. The meal was good and we got to watch 日本プロ野球オールスターズ戦 . My complaint would just be the after-meal activities. It was just so draggy and I didn't enjoy it since I woke up at 7.30am this morning and had not stopped since. I got to walk the Henderson Wave but it was just a horrible experience for me.

The Zoo visit in the morning was just weird. But I was glad to have met my former colleagues and to bitch about this and that. I enjoyed the Heinekein after the event too and I'll send them an invite to the NERF Competition. What a day, I was really stretched and it is just insane to play tennis again at 7am tomorrow.

While I would say it is insane, it was planned 2 weeks ago (because the court takes 2 weeks to book), and since there will only be 2 persons in the court, I can't pull out when I received the 'please help to sell breakfast'-SMS at 10pm. I also couldn't pull myself out to go to Greg's farewell party when it was told only the day before. I just have no time, I had no time to check my office mail today, no time to read the papers and I am worried since the Sunday is spent in church.

Isn't there a better way to live out my weekend? Is serving and spending lots of time in church the trait of a good Christian? I'm not a loner but I need a break, time away from people but the 5 hours of peace from now till I wake up again isn't exactly the peace that I'm looking for.

Friends?

Had quite an enjoyable evening with my MINDEF friends, it was a farewell for me but I thought it was simply a time for gathering when people can de-stress and talk more freely. Imagine an extended lunch time.

Retired to Giraffe @ Istana Park following a not-so-nice dinner and I thought the place was wonderful. The waitress was cute and I must say that even ジョアン would have been impressed if I had brought her there. Haiz... having not studied in Singapore and having no pressure on finding the next chic place to impress a girl have caused be to slack off. Yeah, I don't know any nicer place in Singapore, made worse because I don't bother so much about food myself.

The company was great but couldn't help but to feel a tinge of sadness. Not from the fact that I won't get to meet these people anymore at work but more of a self-pity that I am not destined for greater things. In a scholar office, jokes and conversation will somehow be linked to CEPs, etc. Much as I am laid back and relaxed about issues, I guess there is still that competitive side within me which saddens me because I won't get to compete or try to perform there anymore.

Reading some of the mails, I think I will miss the magnitude of the issues there. Where events that appear in the news are the very things that we deal with. When an email comes, even before the bosses give their guidance, we can more or less expect what we have to do. Learning afresh will not be easy but if it may indeed my a coup for me if I end up somewhere I would really want to go beyond my tour at the NRF.

Glad that I have gotten my reimbursement. It was like a mid-year bonus for me.

Rest

Had dinner at the Barracks yesterday. I must say that Lish had chosen a really good place (though I'm not sure if Shu had indicated that her farewell should be held there). The food was good, the company was even better, and there was a tinge of sadness that Shu was leaving.

I must say that I'm glad to be leaving too because I will be among those who miss her the most at work. She started off as my Upperstudy and then became a friend and her bubbly and encouraging ways simply brightened up the room. Guess Robs will miss her the most, and me a distant second. Anyway, she's just witty and fun, and I must say I'm glad to have gotten to have such a friend in the stressful environment.

Yes, the Barracks. We had the 1-metre-long sausage (it's really called the 1-metre-long sausage), the squid-ink pizza, etc etc. The ambience was wonderful and since it's at Dempsey, I have gotten another excuse to buy a car, hmm...

Took my Vesak Day off today, my break after a 11-day week. Went to the pool and watched T4: Terminator Salvation.

It was quite enjoyable, though I could pick out the loopholes and silly linkages. I was disappointed by John Connor who accepted the heart from Marcus towards the end, I thought he should have been more noble by rejecting it. The director should have made him unconscious for that scene. Lastly, I thought it was just a good finale for the franchise too, but perhaps no one is big enough to call for its end. We'll see who can come up with a better script then for T5.

Oh, also got scouted by MediaCorp near Northpoint after my swim. I was like 'haha, very funny' and waved him off ('I'm already employed' I told him, 'but it's ok ... ...' his voice trailed as I walked off). I would be interested in modelling (ok ok, please don't puke) but acting with the MediaCorp? The shows are so horrible that I had stopped watching local TV since a decade ago.

But I started to wonder, can I serve my bond at the MediaCorp? But I was too embarrassed to approach the scout to ask about it.

Soccer Philosophy

If I were a Liverpool fan, I'd be embarrassed. No, not because Man U had won the Premier League (again) but because of the way Benitez portrayed himself. Liverpool should never have stooped so low as to appear a sore loser.

When someone says that winning the league after 9 gruelling months simply means that the club has more points and doesn't mean it has been the best club for the season, we know the intellectual level of Benitez.

When someone who spent just as much as Man U and Chelsea laments that Man U had the strength in depth because of their spending, we know that Benitez can't count either. It is the kind of statement for Arsene Wenger, not Benitez, who (given the benefit of the doubt) was probably role-playing Wenger for that matter.

Just as the Man U fans are pressuring Fergie to sign Tevez up; Liverpool fans should pressure the Hicks/Middle East owners to sack Benitez to prevent further embarrassment. Let me make it clear, I don't hate Liverpool, just the manager.

----------------------------------------------------

After the final whistle that condemned Liverpool's failure to attain the league title for the 19th or 20th year. I headed down to Timbre to meet with Jordan and Steph. Was surprised to see Alex there too.

It was fun looking at the yuppies for a change, and was glad that Steph came along or we would have just been a table of guys sipping beer and munching pizzas. Headed down to Balestier for supper and reached home before 3.

Set my alarm at 6 and had to summon all my strength to open my eyes. It is never easy playing tennis at 7 in the morning and I didn't really want Francis to know that I didn't bother resting the night before. I felt quite bad because I could not make any clean hit with my back-hand. Just horrible.

Went to church and well, let me explain, I closed my eyes but I was listening. There wasn't anything visual so I see no problem in closing my eyes =P But to be honest, what was Pastor Sam trying to say? It had been quite random. I felt a sudden need to visit other churches.

Then Ian came and was full of the Spirit. I admit I dozed off and with reasons I shouldn't mention, I felt uneasy and left at 4.30pm. Well, I did have an excuse that I need to send an urgent work mail.

So now, I'm home (had wanted to jio people to watch Night at the Museum or Angels & Demons but how to jio when I'm home), wondering if I should sleep early to clear my sleep debt or if I should watch Benitez' not-very-bright face, followed by Tennis.

It's already too much for my brain to take.

Lazy Saturday

Anyway, woke up at 6+ and wondering if it was worth the effort to play tennis this early in the morning. Anyway, dragged myself up and tried the re-strung racket for the first time today.

Had to adjust to the new racket, well, I haven't gotten used to it just yet. Got the control string as power string was not available (not that I'm too particular), and I could really feel the different because the power dissipated by the racket just diminished and a lot depended on my swing. Nevertheless, it was a good workout although I though I had played better last week. Francis was happy and insisted that we got better etc but frankly speaking, we still have got a long way to go and it would be good if we can get others to join in (various styles etc) but who would come at such unearthly hours. Time to make friends with the people in the next court.

Came home and ate unhealthy food before doing my minutes, just 30% through and I ought to be panicky. Napped 1+ hour before dinner at Sakura @ Northpoint. Yes, I'm the 47% HDB-dwellers, and I take the public transport. Had dinner with the family, think it is just appropriate to treat them once every two months now that I'm working, perhaps when my brother starts working, we can take turns.

Sakura may sound Japanese but it is a halal-thai-chinese restaurant. Yeah, unbelievable but it was a good value for money (don't take it seriously because I'm not a food junky). Then bum-ed around and someone tapped me on ths shoulder --- it was BhD (Battalion Handsome Dude) Xinghe, also my PS. All the best for your driving test 2 weeks from now and I can answer some of your questions in Japanese.

Had a good and silly chat with my brother over dinner with topics ranging from the government has no idea how to improve the financial situation and has no incentives because others with a worse scenario would eventually come up with some policies and we could simply follow to buying cars to if I declare on facebook that: Brian (and brother) is (are) looking for a serious girlfriend, then Mervin and others would start suaning and imagine that we're under some parental pressure lol.

Oh yes, I want a watch. Am in a dilemma and can't decide between Brad Pitt, Raikonnen or Tiger Woods ...

Ministry of Food

The Orientation Course has finally come to an end, and I'd say that I got tired after the whole thing. Though there was no fire-fighting, somehow it was draining. I would leave it to me being an introvert. Engaging people is one thing, but I do feel drained after that and though it wasn't before a computer screen, it was a non-stop participation for the full day for the whole week that, yeah, perhaps I should have switched off for a few hours each day.

Well, since it was the last day, Edward suggested dinner + KTV. As I'm not a singer, I joined for dinner and there we met Valerie, Lisheng's girlfriend who teaches in Pioneer JC and colleague of Mengting, my JC classmate. lol

Dinner was at MOF @ Izakaya where I had 辛みそラーメン. Not too bad just that Singapore is just too warm for a proper らーめん. Anyway, got home and think I should sleep early for my tennis tomorrow, need to run too, and to complete the minutes that I have been procrastinating forever.

Just heard from my brother that the Singaporean hostage at Mumbai was killed. What is the world coming to?

Vis-a-Vis

Had lunch at vis-a-vis today

planned to have it elsewhere but walked by it opposite beauty world and I was like 'hey, I know this place!'

Philip has recommended this place before for official meals

Anyway, [official meals = expensive meals] but my colleagues and I were fascinated by the set lunch which said $12.50 for a set lunch (minus coffee) and the captain of the restaurant waved us in

There he recommended us to the $58 for 2, set lunch with coffee with several dishes. So the 4 of us ordered just that with another $12.50 meal, and yeah, it was rather nice. Would have been better if we were not surrounded by the Atas people

Wouldn't mind going there again, but only if I have a car, Zhuang Hui was telling me that the COE got cheaper these days and asked when I'm getting my wheels. Argh ...

飲み足りないから持ってるの

Got to thank Astrid for providing her house last evening. Melvin and Robert's pizza was amazing. I never knew anyone could bake a pizza starting with just flour and yeast and well, who else could we learn from other than these Germans.

Anyway, only got to realise that I had missed Greg's birthday party but then again, I wasn't informed, so ...

Somehow, it was a great evening, minus the fact that I missed the Arsenal VS Man U match. Astrid wouldn't allow the TV to be switched on as everyone would be keeping their eyes glued on the TV. So it was a chilling session with Pizza (which I helped in spreading the dough), tomato salad (which I helped in slicing the tomatoes) over Whiskey (thanks to Robert), Wine (thanks to Stacey) and beer (thanks for all who went to buy).

You know, I have never had a great drinking session ever since I came back (not that I drink that often and it was because I had given up on having great drinking buddies here). Yeah, it was fantastic, just drinking, chilling out with some Wii games in between. We left the house after 3am and frankly speaking, I didn't plan to leave that late, or was it early.

Reached home and laid on my bed without showering (I had not experienced this since I came back from my past life in Tokyo) and woke up with a nice little hangover which was cured with 1.5 litres of isotonic drinks. It was fun and I hope to upload some pics after I get hold of some from Anais and Stacey. Somehow, there is one fewer thing to miss back in Tokyo - Drinking Buddies heh.
------------------------------
Oh, forgot to mention that I met Jiawei at Suntec, Ruiwen, Jin Bao and Yee Le at Raffles City yesterday. Well, there aren't many places for army boys to hang out over the weekends.

2008年11月7日金曜日

Home

The trip flew by, and yeah, it's the weekend again.

The trip went well, think my boss managed to achieve the objective of the trip and guess I wasn't really needed. Anyway, I can now tell people that I have been to Australia though there wasn't any time for R & R, last evening was free but it appears that all the shops close by 6pm during the weekdays and as such, I couldn't get any souvenirs for the 2nd work trip in a row. Worse still, there wasn't a chance for me to get my duty-free alcohol as we were ushered off to the VIP Complex immediately after we alighted. Haiz... Ignoring the cab fares, I have spent a grand total of A$6.95 over the past 3 days.

As we had last evening free, Han Yong and I had to find our own restaurant in Brisbane. As an Armour Officer, I was surprised to hear that he had never been to Brisbane. Our hotel was situated at Edward & Margaret Streets and it appeared to be the Raffles Place in Singapore (correct me if I'm wrong). Anyway, browsed through the menu of Cha Cha Char, Vino's and Jade Buddha ... we found that the pricing was a little too steep for humble civil servants like us (I didn't mind spending more since I didn't get to spend at all but then again, eating wasn't my specialty), in the end, we ended up at McDonald's and that's how I spent my A$6.95 (yes, please laugh, I ate at McDonald's in Australia... haiz)

The plane touched down at 3.15pm and I was home before 4. Unpacked my stuff, bathed, typed a page of minutes and am now waiting for dinner. My colleagues will be drinking at J Bar and my boys are already drinking at St James, I don't know if I am going to either. Feel like nua-ing at home, get a haircut and watch James Bond before nursing my Jet-lag ... 2-hr difference in time isn't a big deal but having to wake up at 4am (Singapore-time) for the past few days, I could do some body-maintenance.

やはり君だけに夢中

どんな時でも杏ちゃんのメッセージが来ると元気が出る。もし毎日会えるとしたら、どれほど幸せなんだろう(バカバカ)

Dad probably tried to cheer me up, and since he is so good at eating, what is a better way other than giving us a treat. Anyway, he suggested Ichiban Sushi. I didn't realise until I flipped through the menu that I had been to the Jurong Point outlet before, anyway, we had 刺身盛り合わせ、soft-shell crab before I had my チキンカツセット, my parents continued to bombard the お寿司 while my brother ordered the 鮭の煮込み~ご飯付き was just telling my brother that the Sorbet was really expensive, though if the S$6.XX is converted to ¥500, I would find it cheap. Oh dear, perceptions ...

2008年10月12日日曜日

I'm so looking forward to Monday

Well, work couldn't be all bad, anyway, just checked my email and nothing important came in, should have worked harder over the weekend but then, it's the weekend, to recap: Tennis in the morning, nua-ing while compiling some stuff in the afternoon, Lucas' wedding banquet, England match ... a minor hangover, storing songs into my Ipod, church, captain's ball, ...

Can't say that it was a happening weekend, could have been better but then, in such a boring place (haha), what could I have done? Zouk after the banquet maybe.

Anyway, I only ate in the canteen once for the whole of last week, wasting my lunchtime outside and then lamented on having to work overtime. Let's see where I went for lunch last week.

Tuesday: the cha-cang-ting in BPP

Wednesday: Da Paolo to bid my boss farewell. A bit atas for a weekday lunch but then again, a farewell lunch could not be held in kopitiam so ...

Thursday: cafe cartel in BPP, very down to earth and the portion was good, please order the set lunch especially if you have a student pass

Friday: Mayim to bid farewell to my boss' boss (yeah, a lot of people are leaving). My first time to Mayim and the food was quite good, I hope to bring my parents there to try one day, rather than going to the same old places over and over again. But then, judging from the last time I brought them somewhere, they may not enjoy something different.

Nothing to rant about

OTs aren't interesting at all and so I'd write about the places I have been to these days - eateries

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blooie's

There's one located at the Rail Mall, and I suppose I'd be able to try all the restaurants there before I leave MINDEF, anyway, I was finishing my lunch in the canteen as usual when this new boss of my boss jio us for lunch outside. And well, he randomly chose this place - Blooie's. It's rather good though I have only tried the caeser's salad (my stomach couldn't hold anymore), quite a nice place to chill and to feel atas in the evening

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brewerks

What's new right? But hey, I seldom drink these days because I have missed the company. I don't like drinking (yeah right), I just enjoy the atmosphere of drowning others while getting myself drowned (figure of speech)

So now that you know I've been domesticated, I needed that dose of alcohol once in a while and yeah, here I came, to Brewerkz@Clarke Quay last evening. What can I say, hmmm... the company isn't a drinking company but it wasn't the worst drinking session I've been to. The drink was supposed to be good but I couldn't appreciate, mainly because I couldn't taste all varieties and because it is so expensive in my country.

Nevertheless, I have explored the Brewerkz in Singapore. And I'm not really a fan. I used to boast that I can never get drunk on anything below 25%, guess it's been reduced to anything below 5% with such lack of practice, but it is rather value-for-money. Wait till I get drunk onmy life, others will be so jealous.

Gathering Bravo 11/12

Did anyone notice the Sunday Times today? On one page it was a write-up on the financial crisis, a brief on the American economic meltdown starting from the fall of the Lehman Bro. while the facing page was showing another condominium estate that is ready for sale. What is the world coming to~
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sermon today ... it didn't really speak to me ... another one of those times when I'd question if it was something wrong with me ... it was so jumpy that I couldn't catch anything other than Pastor Sam trying to say that we have our own Shangri-La in school, NS, work, etc ... the response was too showy for me ... again I questioned if I was wrong ... and 3 hours was way too long for me ... I don't even watch movies in the cinema because it takes too much time ...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That aside, I had a gathering last evening at Marche @ Vivo. It was a gathering for Jonathy Choo and amazing to see the response. Let's see how many came: Jonathy Choo, BhD, Potato, Ricaro, OML, Rhino, Justea, Nigelinho, Chang, Johnnie, BMC, Weifu, playeur, 小黒, Angrubin, Lawry's, and me. Talk about star-power eh? The most yandao and nicest occifer in Bravo 11/12 has proven himself again.

Well, I didn't have my economic Rosti which I always had back in school days. I had the chef's recommendation: Pork Knuckles - It was great.

Waiting for the late-comers

The 'yandaos' in striped-polo T

The happy faces after a satisfying meal

The best-looking 3 of the night (BhD and playeur wouldn't agree)

I really looked awkward here lol

Bistro Petit Salut

Am finally home early this evening, though I was just meeting up and translating effortlessly, I needed time to unwind and yeah, I'm enjoying the time now, just doing nothing at home.

Alright, time to boast about the place I went for lunch yesterday. One of the bosses will be leaving soon so it was a farewell lunch for him. Not that I know him that well, but anything other than canteen is always welcomed - Bistro Petit Salut @ Holland V

I'm not very atas, especially with food but like golf, it is probably something we have to learn sooner or later, whether we enjoy it or not. Kudos to Hong Da for organising something like this in his horrendous schedules.

Ok, let's talk about food. A 3-course set lunch at only $25++ free-flow of water and french loaf (they probably call it with another name), and there are many atas to ogle at, not the Kopitiam Aunties (though I don't mean that everyone who goes to Kopitiam is an Auntie =P) Good food, great atmosphere, a place I'd bring people to or would like people to bring me again.

Thai Steamboat

Was 'celebrating' Kong Hwai's departure for UK to do his Masters, not really a celebration but to make up the farewell that we missed on Saturday, so we had steamboat at Ngee Ann City - Coca Restaurant.

Dinner buffet is priced at S$33.00++ per person and the buffet is done by normal ordering and proper delivery to the table. Unlike some 'cheap-skate' eateries which attempt to delay the serving of food to the anger of customers, the serving came quickly and the service was superb. Did I mention that KongKeat spilled his glass? The waitress sized up the situation and did the appropriate damage control while not dampening our mood.

Must admit that I stole the pics from another open source site but nonetheless, I'd bring others to try it some day.

Morton's Grill

It's good to stay at home rather than staying abroad, even when I have things bothering me, the buzz at home, fretting over the dog, etc ... I didn't have to tell anyone about what's bothering me, yet I'm healed. Nevertheless, this thing just won't go away, perhaps, I can't let go even when I try to, because giving up isn't what I want to do. Still twisting God's arm, will He budge if I pester Him long enough?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is this place called Morton's Grill. I haven't been there but it was a recommended place by the people in office. Checking online, it certainly looks like a good restaurant with wonderful ambience thought the price may be a little steep.

It does look too expensive for an honest civil servant like me (lol) but I believe there will be times when I can feel satisfied eating there.

It is located at the 4th storey of the Mandarin Oriental Singapore. Reservation to be done online. How cool.

Anyone interested in running the Southern Ridges over the weekends?

先輩の壮行会

Our senior when we were studying in Tokyo, Yanpin will be going back there to work (I'm so jealous) after getting her 2 years posting and she'd be flying off early next month. She has been such a wonderful senior, bringing us out when we were Year 0s (Year 0 means the year in language school before the undergrad classes), and she never forgets sending us birthday cards even when she was back in Singapore

Together with several seniors, we had a wonderful time chatting at Sentosa, visited this Cool Deck by the Siloso Beach

http://www.sentosa.com.sg/explore_sentosa/dine_shop/beach_bars.html

Quite a wonderful setting but the speakers for the Live Jazz was a little too loud for us. But then, enjoying the sea breeze and having a drink while watching sunset should be as fantastic.

Then we retreated to Marina @ Keppel Bay

http://www.marinakeppelbay.com/CH_FB.asp

Wanted to visit The Wine Glass but were rejected by the dress code. I was prepared for a 'chiong-ing' session and came prepared but since some came in berms, we just chill out with the remainder of our drinks and snacks in the park nearby.
