There will come a time when one overtakes the parents.
Of course, I can never gain more experience in some areas as compared to my parents, and I can never grow older than them but
physically, I have overtaken them;
academically, I have received more certificates than them;
linguistically, I have surpassed their knowledge, except the level of proficiency in Chinese (maybe);
My parents are just the average of an average-Joe and overtaking them isn't really a big deal but nevertheless, the realisation of me having overtaken them in any area is a significant milestone (at least for me). Parents are usually gracious and proud of the kid's growth and achievement while the kid has to realise that the shelter from the parents in the particular area is no longer available: I have to tough it out myself.
Just imagining that if my parents are those over-achievers, I may never be able to out-do them in anything. Though the shelter will always be around (that they can give advice which I know would work), it will be an endless strive to surpass them.
I'm glad that I am the way I am but sometimes, I wish my parents would know more and would give proper advice on what's troubling me.
