Political Agenda

Was reading through this article on the papers, that PM Lee has declared a small country like Singapore is not suitable for a political scene with two parties undermining each other for the hot seat.

I must agree and disagree with him. Just as a pastor is never the best person to give financial advice, a politician is never totally credible when he speaks about an ideal political system because firstly, we can't imagine him speaking for a system that is unfavorable to his own party.

But I must agree that Singapore is not ready for a strong opposition that can truly challenge the ruling party because there simply isn't enough resources and bright minds to pump into the politics. Politics is a draining and thankless job (not so bad in Singapore unless you are in the opposition) and if we imagine a PAP-size of opposition taking the backseat every five years in the think-tank with the focus to win the next elections, there is significant loss in the nation's productivity. And there simply aren't enough smart and hardworking people to fill up the posts if there are more than one party.

But as the saying goes: never say never; it doesn't mean that the opposition can never rise up. When the PAP doesn't adapt as quickly as it requires and when the opposition is able to find credible candidates to challenge the establishment, who knows.
